Mother's phone call as comforting as a hug, says oxytocin study
Children know that mum's got the words when life seems to be getting too much.
Now it seems her voice on the phone can work the same soothing magic as when she is there to give her offspring a comforting cuddle. US scientists believe hearing mother down the line produces the same stress-busting effect on her daughter as physical contact such as a hug or a loving arm round the shoulder.
In a study that will send phone companies into their own comfort zone, researchers found mothers' calls released similar levels of the social bonding hormone oxytocin in girls as when they were in close proximity. Writing in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the scientists report how they deliberately raised the stress levels of 61 girls aged seven to 12. The children had to make an impromptu speech and solve maths problems in front of strangers. This sent their hearts racing and levels of stress hormone cortisol higher.
The girls were then divided into three groups, one comforted by physical contact with their mothers, another by phone calls from their mothers and a third by watching a film deemed emotionally neutral, the March of the Penguins.Oxytocin rose to similar levels in the first two groups and did not increase in the third, saliva and urine tests revealed. As this hormone's presence grew, cortisol faded.
Leslie Seltzer, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who led the research, said: "The children who got to interact with their mothers had virtually the same hormonal response, whether they interacted in person or over the phone."It was understood that oxytocin release in the context of social bonding usually required physical contact. But it's clear from these results that a mother's voice can have the same effect as a hug, even if they're not standing there."The effects lingered too, said another member of the team. "It stays well beyond the stressful task," said Professor Seth Pollak, from the university's child emotion laboratory. "By the time the children go home they're still enjoying the benefits of this relief and their cortisol levels are still low. That a simple telephone call could have this physiological effect on oxytocin is really exciting."
Girls were used in the study because oxytocin responses are stronger in females than in males. In adult women the hormone plays a role in labour, preparing for birth and breastfeeding.
There might be an evolutionary reason for other responses, experts believe. A threatened male is free to choose between "fight or flight", but this may not be so easy for a female who is pregnant or caring for offspring. It might be that females alleviate stress by making the peace.
Seltzer is investigating whether other forms of communication, such as text messaging, have an effect on oxytocin and hopes to expand the research into animals.
"Lots of very social species vocalise," she said. "On the one hand we're curious to see if this effect is unique to humans. On the other we're hoping researchers who study vocal communication will consider looking at oxytocin release in other animals and applying it to broader questions of social behaviour and evolutionary biology."happy new year

Cameron's cabinet: A guide to who's who
Conservative David Cameron was virtually unknown outside Westminster when he was elected Tory leader in December 2005 at the age of 39.
The Old Etonian had dazzled that year's party conference with his youthful dynamism and charisma, reportedly telling journalists he was the "heir to Blair".
He has sought to match the former PM by putting the Conservatives at the centre ground of British politics.
Before becoming leader, he was the Conservatives' campaign co-ordinator at the 2005 general election and shadow education secretary.
He was special adviser to Home Secretary Michael Howard and Chancellor Norman Lamont in the 1990s before spending seven years as a public relations executive with commercial broadcaster Carlton.
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER - NICK CLEGGNick Clegg
In just five years, Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg, at 43 the same age as Mr Cameron, has gone from political obscurity to the absolute front line of British politics.
After becoming MP for Sheffield Hallam at the 2005 election, he was promoted to Europe spokesman, before moving on to the home affairs role.
When Sir Menzies Campbell resigned as leader in 2007, he entered the race to succeed him, in the end narrowly beating Chris Huhne.
He has campaigned against the government over civil liberties and opposed the Conservatives' spending cuts plans, attempting to create a distance between the Lib Dems and what he calls the "old parties".
But he really came to prominence during the televised debates ahead of the general elections, being judged in polls to have been the big winner of the first one.
However, this appeared to do little to help the Lib Dems when they actually lost seats on 6 May. The party, though, retained enough MPs to become the vital players in the hung parliament.
FOREIGN SECRETARY - WILLIAM HAGUE
William Hague
Since he returned to the shadow cabinet in 2005, Conservative William Hague has become a key adviser to David Cameron, and was seen as de facto deputy party leader.
The new foreign secretary has plenty of experience to call upon, having been Tory leader himself from 1997 to 2001 and shadow foreign secretary until the election.
A witty and engaging Commons performer who is popular with grassroots Tory members, Mr Hague entered Parliament in 1989 having been special adviser to Chancellor Sir Geoffrey Howe. He was soon promoted to be a social security minister and in 1995 entered the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Wales.
In addition to his duties as shadow foreign secretary, Mr Cameron put Mr Hague in charge of rebuilding the party in the North of England, as chairman of its Northern Board.
CHANCELLOR - GEORGE OSBORNE
George Osborne
One of David Cameron's closest friends and Conservative allies, George Osborne rose rapidly after becoming MP for Tatton in 2001.
Michael Howard promoted him from shadow chief secretary to the Treasury to shadow chancellor in May 2005, at the age of 34.
Mr Osborne took a key role in the election campaign and has been at the forefront of the debate on how to deal with the recession and the UK's spending deficit.
Even before Mr Cameron became leader the two were being likened to Labour's Blair/Brown duo. The two have emulated them by becoming prime minister and chancellor, but will want to avoid the spats.
Before entering Parliament, he was a special adviser in the agriculture department when the Tories were in government and later served as political secretary to William Hague.
DEFENCE SECRETARY - DR LIAM FOX
Liam Fox
The former GP came third in the 2005 party leadership contest, presenting himself as a candidate of the right.
A popular figure with the party's grassroots, he was co-chairman during the 2005 general election but was moved to the shadow foreign secretary portfolio in May.
Under both William Hague and Iain Duncan Smith, he served as shadow health secretary.
And when the Conservatives were in government in the 1990s, Dr Fox was a whip and later a Foreign Office minister.
As shadow defence secretary he has led his party's criticism of funding for the armed forces under Gordon Brown and he retains that brief as the party moves into government.
HEALTH SECRETARY - ANDREW LANSLEYAndrew Lansley
The former civil servant became an active Conservative in the 1980s after a spell as private secretary to Norman Tebbit.
In 1990 he became head of the Conservative Research Department and was one of the architects of the Tories' surprise 1992 election victory. However, he later faced criticism for his central role in the disastrous 2001 poll campaign.
He returned to the shadow cabinet in 2003 under Michael Howard as shadow health secretary, the role he continues to hold under David Cameron.
Mr Cameron had long guaranteed Mr Lansley - who has played a key role in convincing people that the NHS is a high priority for the Conservatives - the role of health secretary in a government led by him.
BUSINESS/BANKING - VINCE CABLE
Vince Cable
Vince Cable has had a long journey to reach the front rank of politics, having first been a Labour and then SDP supporter before its merger with the Liberals to become the Liberal Democrats.
An economist by trade, he entered Parliament as MP for Twickenham in 1997 and has gradually built up his powerbase among the Lib Dems.
As the party's deputy leader and Treasury spokesman he saw his stock rising during the credit crunch because of his earlier warnings about .
When he stood in as temporary leader after the resignation of Sir Menzies Campbell, he memorably described Gordon Brown as going from "Stalin to Mr Bean".
He is expected to have some sort of Treasury/business job, probably including some brief to oversee the banking system. It is not yet clear what the title of the post will be.
ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE -CHRIS HUHNE
Chris Huhne
Chris Huhne is set to become Energy and Climate Change Secretary, the BBC understands. Like Nick Clegg, Mr Huhne entered Parliament in 2005. He also attended the same school - the exclusive Westminster public school - and served as a Member of the European Parliament.
They have much in common, but they fought a close - and sometimes angry - campaign for the leadership in 2007.
Afterwards Mr Huhne, who had been environment spokesman, was promoted to the home affairs brief. He made a fortune in the City before entering politics, and is seen as being on the left of the party.
He was a key member of the Lib Dem team which held talks about a coalition with both Labour and the Conservatives. He would be expected to be among the five Lib Dems in the cabinet.
OTHER LIB DEMS EXPECTED TO FEATURE IN COALITION CABINET:
DAVID LAWSDavid Laws
On the economically liberal wing of the Lib Dems, David Laws has been an MP since 2001.
A former investment banker, he was quickly promoted to the party's Treasury team, taking responsibility for spending commitments in the lead-up to the 2005 election.
After that he moved to work and pensions and then, in 2007, to speak on children, families and schools. He earned plaudits from some in the Conservative Party in this role.
But the Yeovil MP was relatively low profile until he became part of the Lib Dem negotiating team following the hung parliament which resulted from the election. Has been tipped as a possible education secretary.
DANNY ALEXANDERDanny Alexandr
Wells Lib Dem MP Tessa Munt has told the BBC that she understands Danny Alexander will probably be Scottish Secretary. He was Nick Clegg's chief of staff and the Liberal Democrats' campaign co-ordinator throughout the election. He was also the former media chief of pro-euro campaign group Britain in Europe, which brought together leading Labour and Lib Dem voices with business groups.
First elected to Parliament in 2005, he rose to prominence when Mr Clegg became party leader in 2007.
He was the author of the party's 2010 election manifesto.
The Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey MP won one of 11 seats for the Lib Dems in Scotland. from and go

prevailing service
I really have no position to speak against this prevailing service while gaining benefits from it. First of all, the moment I taught my father how to send Chinese messages by mobile phone, a 24 hour communication is maintained between school and home which performed as a best therapy to homesick (to help me adapt well to the college life at the beginning of the semester). Quite beyond my belief, the charge for every piece of SM has become a money unit functioning something like a weighing apparatus to help decide whether a bargain is good or not.For instance, scarcely did my roommates and I know asking for a doggy-bag at school canteen costs another three jiao when an e
quation consequently reflected upon our minds which told “a doggy-bag is three short messages”.
No doubt that it’s wonderful as it makes your life colorful. But do remember not to spoil your fingers with too much freedom, or your money and heart will be captured tenderly.

The technology of optical singal processing has become the support of optical communication, and it will play a more important role in the all optical communication network in the future. The optical label switching of the packet transmission network has a great advantage at the network performance, quality of service and cost of network, ect . It is the most efficient and long-term way to solve the problems which are flexibility of network, capability of network and hair straighteners throughput rate. And all optical label signals processing is one of the key technology of optical labels switching. In this paper, label generation, label swapping and label transmission are researched by numerical chi dazzle simulation, theoretical analysis and experiment verification. The results obtained are as follows:1. A novel scheme based on EAM to produce optical label and erase old label are proposed and proved. The label is discount wedding dresses generated by IM , and the modulation rate is 2.5Gbit/s; the payload is generated by FSK, and the modulation rate is 80Gbit/s. The old label is extracted and erased by EAM in the switching cheap wedding gown dresses node, and then we insert the new label and realize the payloads all optical transmission. The feasibility of this cheap evening dresses scheme is proved by simulation and theoretical analysis. This scheme is characteristic of simple structure, easy to realize and suitable for long distance transmission.

bio-medical and many other prospects
With the development of technology of wireless communication, sensor, embedded computing, distributed information processing, wireless sensor networks chi pink dazzle have made rapid development. Due to its potential applications in military, industrial, agricultural, bio-medical and many other prospects, wireless sensor networks have been gaining more and more chi hair straightener attention. There are many problems to be solved in appling wireless sensor Lacoste Polo Shirts network, and one of them is coverage control. Furthermore, how to Lacoste Shirts determine quantity and deployment positions of nodes, according to limited energy supply, to achieve the goal of maximizing the network lifetime has been one of the key issues of the coverage control.WSN coverage control not only means simple meaning of coverage, but also is necessarily related to specific aspects such as chi hair straightener energy-saving communication, path planning, reliable communications and target locating. In accordance with different configuration types among nodes (i.e., whether the node needs to know its own location information), WSN coverage control is divided into two types: deterministic and random.Typical deterministic coverages include certainty regional/point coverage, grid-based target coverage. Certainty region/point coverage refers to the location information of WSN nodes being known in achieving the target area or target point coverage.

Madame Curie
Madame Curie is a French professor of physics. She was born in Poland in 1867. When she was young, she became in terested in physics. At that time women were not admitted to universities in Poland, so she was determined to go to Paris University and study there. When she was studying in Paris. she lived a very poor life. However, she worked very hard and succeeded in taking a first class degree in physics two years after arriving in Paris. In 1895, she married Pierre Curie, a very bright scientist, and then they worked together on the research into radioactive matter. They discovered two kinds of radioactive matters―Polunium and Radium. In 1904 she and her husband received the Nobel Prize for Physics. In 1906 Pierre died. Marie was deeply shocked by Pierre's death but determined to go on working. She received a second Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1911. So he became the first scientist in the world to win two Nobel Prizes.

multicast sessions
There are two all-opitcal multicast vshemes in WDM networks:one is light-tree based multicast in OCS(Optical Circuit Switching)networks, and anther is packet based multicast in OBS(Optical Burst Switching)networks. However, both of them have disadvantages. In the discount wedding dresses network, the multicast sessions are transported by the light-trees and a light-tree can provide as much as gigabit bandwidth, but a muticast session only need a small part of it.So the utilization of the bandwidth in the lace wedding dresses network is very low。Although the cheap wedding gown dresses Multicast Traffic Grooming in Wavelength-Routed network can improve the utilization of the bandwidth, it has high cost and a complexity algorithm. The multicast on the lace wedding dresses network has also been studied. In the OBS network, it has a good utilization of the bandwidth but can’t meet the need of low cheap evening dresses packet loss probability and packet latancy. In this paper, we first analyse the disadvantages of the OCS and OBS multicast vshemes and then we propose a Hybrid optical switching network called c-Hylabs(Cycle based Hybrid Lightpath And Burst Switching) and propose an efficient multicast vsheme on c-Hylabs. Simulation demonstrate that the c-Hylabs multicast vsheme performs better than OBS multicast vsheme in terms of packet loss probability and packet latancy.

Beating Crime with Printers
Perhaps it would be naive to think that the 21st century governments would stop at monitoring your every move on the street. Pause for a minute to contemplate what the next level of tracking could include. The answer is laser printers. If you think a document from your colour laser printer doesn't carry your name, think again.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) claims that it has cracked the tracking codes embedded in Xerox Corporation's DocuColor laser printers. Such codes are simply one of the numerous ways manufacturers employ technology to help governments fight currency counterfeiting.
The United States government is allegedly involved with a number of other companies in separate anti-counterfeiting programmes meant to prevent currency from being scanned and printed. The U.S. government, however, is not the only country teaming with the printing industry to fight counterfeiters. A few experts believe that the Dutch government is also using similar anti-counterfeiting methods through Canon’s encoding technology.
Researchers in the U.S. have uncovered patterns of yellow dots arranged in 15 by 8 grids and printed repeatedly over every colour page. The dots, however, are visible only with a magnifying glass or under blue light, which causes the yellow dots to appear black. The code appears as a grid of microscopic yellow dots, each less than a millimeter in diameter. These millimeter-sized dots appear about every inch on a printed page, nestled within the words and margins. By analyzing various test pages printed by supporters worldwide, researchers found that some of the dots correspond to the printers' serial numbers, and other dots refer to the date and time of the printing.

setting station sites
This platform can realize the following tasks: setting station sites, simulation parameters and relevant parameters about the interference of the system. Finishing these tasks the platform can simulate the interference among different systems chi flat iron and obtain the loss of system capacity because of the interference. Besides, by using the polo shirts platform the paper analyzes the ACIR (Adjacent Channel Interference power Ratio) value, the loss of capacity with different deviation of the base station. On the basis of repeated simulation, the paper gets the performance of the network when the two systems co-exist: when ACIR value between 1x and chi hair straighteners keeps stable and the distance seperation between two systems increases gradually from 0 to cell radius R, the interference will also be on rise; when two systems are co-site, the capacity loss resulting from the system interference is the least and when the distribution of the sites is certain the interference will reduce with the hair straighteners increase of the ACIR value. Lastly, the paper comes up with the Lacoste Polo suggestions according to the simulation analysis and results. The paper has finished the following tasks: it combines the mutual-simulation of 1x and EV-DO into Monte Carlo. Then the paper devises the simulation Lacoste Polo Shirts platform among CDMA systems. By operating the platform, the network topology sites can be easily established, simulation parameters can be set up and the simulation of the interference among different the flat iron shop for us systems can be realized. In one word this research has great value of popularization.

STDMA protocol
How to design and optimize link layer protocols is one of the research hotspots in Mobile Ad Hoc networks. Firstly the link layer based on Scheduling strategies generally adopted TDMA (Time Division Media Access) protocol. One effective method of improving TDMA protocol is to adopt STDMA (Spatial TDMA) mechanism. So lastly combining the ascendants both of ugg boots 2010 them, STDMA MAC protocol, linking scheduling and Ad Hoc networking method are proposed. This dissertation starts with the basic conceptions and characteristics of ultrashort best clothes blog Selforganized Network and introduces the current main problems and application foreground of wireless Selforganized Network. information system
Call center is a complicated information system. Usually, it seems running well, but in some special cases, an exception for instance, there are many calls coming at the same time, and lasting for a long time. This makes the call center system performance decline sharply, even the worse, the system crashed. The reason of this phenomenal is cause by one or two bad performance modules. They cannot deal with problems in bad situation. Therefore, they lead to the whole system service cut down. Nowadays, Web agent plays a leading role in the Internet call center. But the development of testing and monitoring Web agent is slow, especially in the End to End testing and monitoring. Therefore, it is significant to research in this field. And the first thing is to create a correct script to do load testing. We know that script engineers could only debug script manually in the past, there was no tools to help them looking for the variables in the script. They would waste a lot of time to create a script but nobody was sure whether it was correct. There was no way to test the veracity of the script. This article will analysis the shortage of using current Web testing tools to simulate call center Web agents. Then, it will introduce a new solution to simulate call center Web agents. This solution is based on a Eclipse Rich Client Platform framework. It uses Java Business Process Management to control the script playback and draws a process diagram. It also uses Java to implement HTTP recording and multiple threads playback. The most important thing is that the solution makes the process visualized by using a process diagram during recording and testing script. It is an extreme facility to locate errors. So, we can work out a correct script for load testing by a few steps. This article will take American Siebel call center as an example to give a process of generating script, debugging script and deploy script in detail.

So,regarding to such nike running shoes of chinese education, the reform of education should focus on two basic aspects. First, pay attention to the education procedures. The country should refresh the view of the traditional values of human resources, we should abandon the thought of score being the most important. The school should focus on the procedure of study and try to improve the integrated ablity of nike trainers. Secod, improve the capality of the teachers. A good teacher should treat the students kindly and give them advices in various fields for a teacher is due to not only enhance the imagination and creativity of the students, but also tell them the right way of living and treating the cheap nike shoes.
In summary, we should straightly face the problems occured in the past years, and learn a lesson from them to speed up the development of education in China.

The Important Things in Life
Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become.
You never know who these people may be - a roommate, a neighbor, a professor, a friend, a lover, or even a complete stranger - but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some profound way.
Sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful, and unfair at first, but in reflection you find that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, willpower, or heart.
Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved straight flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless.
The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and downfalls you experience, help to create who you are and who you become. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are sometimes the most important ones.
If someone loves you, give love back to them in whatever way you can, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.
If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart.
Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and listen to what they have to say.
Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don't believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you.
You can make anything you wish of your life. Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets.
And if you love someone tell them, for you never know what tomorrow may have in store.

Pageants
Pageants are usually conceived on a fairly large scale, often under the auspices of some local or civic authority or at any rate in connection with local groups of some kind. This sometimes means that there is an allocation of funds available for the purpose of mounting the production, though unfortunately this will usually be found to be on the meager side and much ingenuity will have to be used to stretch it so that all performers can be adequately clothed.
Most pageants have a historical flavour as they usually come about through the celebration of the anniversary of some event of historic importance, or the life or death of some local worthy. Research among archives and books in the public library will probably prove very useful and produce some workable ideas which will give the production an especially local flavour. From the first economy will have to be practiced because there are usually a great number of people to dress. Leading characters can be considered individually in the same way as when designing for a play; but the main body of the performers will need to be planned in groups and the massed effect must be always borne in mind.
Many pageants take place in daylight in the open air. This is an entirely different problem from designing costumes which are going to be looked at under artificial lighting; for one thing, scenes viewed in the daylight are subject to many more distractions. No longer is everything around cut out by the surrounding darkness, but instead it is very easy to be aware of disturbing movement in the audience of behind the performers. Very theatrically conceived clothes do not always look their best when seen in a daylight setting of trees, verdant lawns and old ivy-covered walls; the same goes for costumes being worn in front of the mellow colors of stately homes. The location needs to be studied and then a decision can be made as to what kinds of colors and textures will harmonize best with the surroundings and conditions and then to carry this out as far as possible on the funds available.
If money is available to dress the performers without recourse to their own help in the provision of items, it is best to arrange for all the cutting and pinning together of the costumes to be done by one or two experienced people than to be given out to the groups and individuals for completion. When there is little or no money at all, the garments need to be reduced to the basic necessities. Cloaks and shawls become invaluable, sheets and large bath towels and bath sheets are admirable for draping. Unwanted curtains and bed spreads can be cut to make tunics, robes and skirts. These are particularly valuable if they are of heavy fabrics such as velvet or chenille.
Colors should be massed together so that there are contrasting groups of dark and light, this will be found to help the visual result substantially. Crowds of people gathered together in a jumble of colors will be ground to look quite purposeless and will lack dramatic impact.
The use of numbers of identical head-dresses, however simply made, are always effective when working with groups. If these are made of cardboard and painted boldly the cost can be almost negligible. Helmets, hats and plumes will all make quite a show even if the costumes are only blandest or sheets cleverly draped. The same can be said of the use of banners, shields and poles with stiff pennants and garlands—anything which will help to have a unifying effect. Any kind of eye-catching device will always go with a flourish and add excitement to the scenes.

Add a green message to your email from today
You've probably seen the message, "Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail," at the end of e-mails you receive.
Adding a green message to your e-mail signature can be an effective way to draw notice. After all, the people you're e-mailing know you. If you care about the environment, they may wonder what more they can do as well.
Here's a story to illustrate my point. Michael, that’s my husband in case you didn' know, added an e-mail signature like the one above to his work e-mails. Others in his department started doing the same. In a staff meeting, the organizer said something like, "Well, I didn't print out an agenda for everyone this time because of all that save-the-paper messages in your e-mails. I wrote it on the board instead."
That's a small, but great change. E-mail signatures can help people think. Now here’s something for you to think about:
Do you actually refer back to those e-mails you print? How often can you make PDFs of documents instead of printing them?
Here are some e-mail signatures I came up with just for you to consider:
•If you hug a tree, you'll be hugged back twice. Please think about not printing this e-mail.
•Trees like you, so please wink back by not printing this e-mail.
•Love a tree, don't hit print.
•Make sense, not waste. Don't hit print.
•Ask me why you should think twice before printing this e-mail.
•Does e-mail make us print more than we did before?
•You're too smart to print this e-mail.
•Lower your impact today by not printing this e-mail.
•Even recycled paper takes energy to make. Do you really need to print this e-mail?
If you have a green e-mail signature, please tell us about it.
yes it is
Time is running out for my friend. While we are sitting at lunch she casually mentions she and her husband are thinking of starting a family. "We're taking a survey,"she says, half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?"
"It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral. "I know,"she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous holidays..."
But that's not what I mean at all. I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will be vulnerable forever.
I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without thinking: "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die. I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub.
I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for child care, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting, and she will think her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her child is all right.
I want my friend to know that every decision will no longer be routine. That a five-year-old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at a restaurant will become a major dilemma. The issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in the lavatory. However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.
Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the added weight of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her own life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. She would give it up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more yearsnot to accomplish her own dreamsbut to watch her children accomplish theirs.
I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to hit a ball. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real it hurts.
My friend's look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "You'll never regret it," I say finally. Then, squeezing my friend's hand, I offer a prayer for her and me and all of the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this holiest of callings.
